What Happens Next - Passing of health reform legislation

Good afternoon,
Since the House of Representatives voted to pass health reform legislation on Sunday night, the legislative process and its political impact have been the focus of all the newspapers and cable TV pundits.
Outside of DC, however, many Americans are trying to cut through the chatter and get to the substance of reform with a simple question: "What does health insurance reform actually mean for me?" To help, we've put together some of the key benefits from health insurance reform.
Let's start with how health insurance reform will expand and strengthen coverage:

This year, children with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied health insurance coverage. Once the new health insurance exchanges begin in the coming years, pre-existing condition discrimination will become a thing of the past for everyone.
This year, health care plans will allow young people to remain on their parents' insurance policy up until their 26th birthday.
This year, insurance companies will be banned from dropping people from coverage when they get sick, and they will be banned from implementing lifetime caps on coverage. This year, restrictive annual limits on coverage will be banned for certain plans. Under health insurance reform, Americans will be ensured access to the care they need.
This year, adults who are uninsured because of pre-existing conditions will have access to affordable insurance through a temporary subsidized high-risk pool.
In the next fiscal year, the bill increases funding for community health centers, so they can treat nearly double the number of patients over the next five years.
This year, we'll also establish an independent commission to advise on how best to build the health care workforce and increase the number of nurses, doctors and other professionals to meet our country's needs. Going forward, we will provide $1.5 billion in funding to support the next generation of doctors, nurses and other primary care practitioners -- on top of a $500 million investment from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Health insurance reform will also curb some of the worst insurance industry practices and strengthen consumer protections:

This year, this bill creates a new, independent appeals process that ensures consumers in new private plans have access to an effective process to appeal decisions made by their insurer.
This year, discrimination based on salary will be outlawed. New group health plans will be prohibited from establishing any eligibility rules for health care coverage that discriminate in favor of higher-wage employees.
Beginning this fiscal year, this bill provides funding to states to help establish offices of health insurance consumer assistance in order to help individuals in the process of filing complaints or appeals against insurance companies.
Starting January 1, 2011, insurers in the individual and small group market will be required to spend 80 percent of their premium dollars on medical services. Insurers in the large group market will be required to spend 85 percent of their premium dollars on medical services. Any insurers who don't meet those thresholds will be required to provide rebates to their policyholders.
Starting in 2011, this bill helps states require insurance companies to submit justification for requested premium increases. Any company with excessive or unjustified premium increases may not be able to participate in the new health insurance exchanges.

Reform immediately begins to lower health care costs for American families and small businesses:

This year, small businesses that choose to offer coverage will begin to receive tax credits of up to 35 percent of premiums to help make employee coverage more affordable.
This year, new private plans will be required to provide free preventive care: no co-payments and no deductibles for preventive services. And beginning January 1, 2011, Medicare will do the same.
This year, this bill will provide help for early retirees by creating a temporary re-insurance program to help offset the costs of expensive premiums for employers and retirees age 55-64.
This year, this bill starts to close the Medicare Part D 'donut hole' by providing a $250 rebate to Medicare beneficiaries who hit the gap in prescription drug coverage. And beginning in 2011, the bill institutes a 50% discount on prescription drugs in the 'donut hole.'

Elizabeth Sher's "Bars and Tone."

The old idea of a presiding spirit of place, or genius loci, seems pleasantly anachronistic in our brave, new, wired world, just as the idea of regional art styles (or of untutored geniuses, for that matter) now seems quaint in our global art market: Can there still be undiscovered, untapped resources? Such thoughts are dispiriting, and getting away from the chatter and slowing down is occasionally prescribed, even for monkey-brained Homo verbosus. The New Pacific Studio is located at Mt. Bruce, on the southern part of New Zealand's north island, amid farming and sheep-raising lands adjoining the scenic Tararua Mountains. Although it sounds about as far as you can get from here, New Pacific Studio was founded by far-ranging denizens of Berkeley and Davis, and its residencies and retreats make for fine antipodean creative hermitages — but not uncivilized ones, as New Pacific Studio features comfortable accommodations and well-equipped studios (and even Internet access for lonely dark nights of the soul).

Process & Place: The Transformative Potential of Artist Residencies, curated by Berkeley Art Center's Suzanne Tan and artist Elizabeth Sher, presents the work of six local former residents: Amy Berk, Edith Hillinger, Brooke Holve, Anne Lamborn, Mary Curtis Ratcliff, and Elizabeth Sher. The residencies encouraged the exploration of long-standing interests and concerns, but Asian-Pacific landscape and culture permeate the work in subtle ways. Berk's embroidery piece, "Buddha Smiles (Angkor Wat)," drawing on her travels in Asia, depicts a flotilla of lips resembling origami boats, and smiling only in the most restrained divine fashion — no Cheshire-Cat grins here — hovering in a void or ocean or air. Hillinger's "Floating Scroll" watercolors stack floral motifs, realistic and imagined, into totem-like presences; her "Doubletake Poppy Petal 28 Diptych" juxtaposes photographic and watercolor studies of a beautifully decaying flower. Holve's multimedia installation, "Long Look;" Lamborn's weavings, "Sunrise at Mt. Bruce" and "Evening Sky Over Tararus;" and Sher's polyptych painting, "Bars and Tone," and video, "Frenzy," employ assemblage and abstraction in order to respond to the New Zealand landscape. Ratcliff's mixed-media works, "Mountains and Sea, Keri Keri" and "Waterweb," combine nature photography with drawing, capturing a specific place and time, yet also transcending them. This upcoming week is jammed pack with some great shows that I can't encourage you enough to check out!

Starting Thursday night at Yoshi's San Francisco the incredible percussionist Babatunde Lea is releasing his new CD Umbo Weti: A Tribute to Leon Thomas. Listen here to recording of Leon Thomas singing The Creator Has a Master Plan, from Pharoah Sanders album Karma. Be sure to catch the Babatunde Lea Quintet before he leaves the Bay Area. I have been blessed to see him play many times and every time I am amazed and lifted! I can't encourage you enough!

Also Thursday across the bridge at Yoshi's Oakland is Tito Gonzalez y su Son de Cuba, releasing his CD, "Al Doblar la Esquina". This is such a great band and true joy to see perform! This show will allow you to forget time and work and you will just relax and enjoy! To read more about Tito's new album click here and to listen click here!

Friday - Sunday at Dance Mission Theater at 24th and Mission in San Francisco is three days of tremendous benefit performances where all proceeds will benefit Dance Mission Theater Youth Program, Grrrl Brigade, Adult Classes, Studio Rentals, Showcases and Dance Series. Enjoy performances by Las Que Son Son (video with Erick Barberia), Royland Lobato, Cheo Rojas, Erick Barberia, Rueda Con Ritmo, Raffaella Falchi, Salsa Vale Todo, Grrrl Brigade, and many many more! On Sunday, you can take a salsa less with Ramon and dance to the live music of MANICATO. The price of admission is $12 -$25 sliding scale.

Also Friday - Sunday over at Yoshi's Oakland is the incredible Zigaboo Modelieste (video) with Dr. John (Let the Good Times Roll video), Nicholas Payton (Bags' Groove video) and others. Zigaboo is the funk in the The Meters - don't miss this show - I guarantee you a stompin' good time!

Saturday night will be a very special show with Quijerema at Avonova, a beautiful house venue with amazing sound in the Rockridge area of Oakland. Quijerema is Latin American folk with straight ahead jazz! Quique Cruz, Maria Acuna, Jeremy Allen, John Calloway and Elijah Samuals - this is beautiful music at it's finest!

This week's Tu Gusto Musical concert presented by Urban Music Presents

is presenting one of my favorite, favorite salsa bands! I am so excited to showcase Master Timbalero Louie Romero y Mazacote at Coda Supper Club this Sunday. This band will have the entire house dancing! The percussion and horns in this band or incredible! It is the perfect way to wind down your weekend - enjoying good food, good drink and great music at Coda! Check out Louie Romero y Mazacote Video here.

We are so blessed and fortunate to have such amazing talent in the Bay Area. The John Santos Sextet is playing 4pm in the afternoon at one of my favorite venues - Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay. Nothing is better to be right on the water in a beautiful setting and listening to the most incredible Afro-Cuban Jazz!

In this remarkable two CD collective are 23 amazing tracks with Machete Ensemble, Wayne Wallace, Tanaóra, John Calloway and many more! In the spirit of Ron, 100% of the proceeds of this album will be donated to Sionfonds for Haiti - an organization that is providing Haitian people to help themselves and be self-sustainable. Mazacote is the hard-swinging, old-school salsa group led by legendary percussionist Louie Romero, who came to fans' attention as the longtime timbales player for famed salsero "El Cantante" Hector Lavoe.

Louie is also renowned for his work with Willie Colón, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Ron Carter, and other salsa and jazz stars in his native New York.

Because of you, every American will finally be guaranteed high quality, affordable health care coverage.

Every American will be covered under the toughest patient protections in history. Arbitrary premium hikes, insurance cancellations, and discrimination against pre-existing conditions will now be gone forever.

NOTE: The price for a one ounce First-Class stamp increased from 42 cents to 44 cents on May 11, 2009.

Good news! The U.S. Postal Service has announced that the price for a First-Class Mail stamp will not increase in 2010. Mailing service price increases are capped at the rate of inflation. First-Class Mail stamps will remain 44 cents, and not increase in 2010!
